  • Recurrent autoimmune hepatitis and de novo autoimmune hepatitis are two important causes of late graft failure after liver transplantation. Recurrent autoimmune hepatitis occurs in patients who undergo liver transplantation for autoimmune hepatitis. De novo autoimmune hepatitis occurs in patients who are transplanted for etiologies other than autoimmune hepatitis. Although typically treated with standard treatment for autoimmune hepatitis including corticosteroids and azathioprine, both recurrent and de novo autoimmune hepatitis may progress to end-stage liver disease requiring re-transplant.
