  • Incisional hernia is one of the most common complications of laparotomy and, given its high incidence, has been estimated to cost more than $3 billion annually in the United States alone. Surgical mesh has become an invaluable tool, especially in hernia repair, and novel mesh design and development continues at a rapid pace. Following a brief description of ventral incisional hernia, this comprehensive review discusses several classes of mesh and individual design elements, tissue engineering principles and performance characteristics, and complications including hernia recurrence, adhesions and postoperative pain.
