  • Surgical site infection is a common complication of a caesarean birth. It may require readmission to hospital and can give rise to more severe complications such as sepsis and necrotising fasciitis. In addition to the routine use of pre-incision antibiotic prophylaxis, a number of non-pharmacological interventions may be carried out before, during, and after surgery with the aim of reducing the risk of surgical site infection, such as the use of pre-operative skin or vaginal preparations and different types of wound dressings. The aim of this review is to determine which of these methods are effective at reducing infections and improving women's outcomes.
