lüll Midazolam or ketamine for procedural sedation of children in the emergency department Munro A; Machonochie IEmerg Med J 2007[Aug]; 24 (8): 579-80A short cut review was carried out to establish whether ketamine or midazolam is superior at providing safe and effective conscious sedation in children in the emergency department. A total of 203 papers were found using the reported searches, of which four presented the best evidence to answer the clinical question. The author, date and country of publication, patient group studied, study type, relevant outcomes, results and study weaknesses of these best papers are summarised in table 1. It is concluded that midazolam and ketamine have similar efficacy and safety profiles but that ketamine is preferred by parents and physicians.|Anesthetics, Dissociative/*therapeutic use[MESH]|Child[MESH]|Child, Preschool[MESH]|Conscious Sedation/*instrumentation/methods[MESH]|Emergency Medicine/*instrumentation/methods[MESH]|Humans[MESH]|Hypnotics and Sedatives/therapeutic use[MESH]|Infant[MESH]|Ketamine/*therapeutic use[MESH]|Midazolam/*therapeutic use[MESH]|Pediatrics/*instrumentation/methods[MESH]|Treatment Outcome[MESH]|Vomiting/chemically induced[MESH] |
