The Frizzled/planar cell polarity (PCP) and anterior-posterior (AP) patterning systems for planar polarity operate in a variety of cell types and provide direction to cells with different morphologies and behaviors. These two systems involve different sets of proteins but both use directional cues provided locally by communication between neighboring cells.
