Novel synthetic methodologies are reviewed for porphyrin synthesis, porphyrin analog synthesis, stable porphyrinogens -- calixpyrroles, expanded porphyrins. Unique biological properties of those compounds are desribed with focus on photodynamic therapy (PDT) and molecular recognition properties.
