Recently,the Food and Drug Administration provided approval through a Humanitarian Device Exemption for DBS of the globus pallidus internus and subthalamic nucleus for the treatment of dystonia. There is increasing clinical experience demonstrating that DBS is also effective for other hyperkinetic disorders such as chorea from a variety of causes.
